Anatomy of Braces

A. Ligature tie: Holds the archwire in place

B. Archwire: Tied to the brackets & creates force to move teeth into alignment

E. Elastic hook & Rubber band: Hooks are used to attach rubberbands, which help move teeth to the final position
C. Brackets: Directly bonded to the teeth & hold archwire in place

D. Band: Cemented metal ring wrapped around the teeth and holds wire in place

Missing Ligature Tie or Chain

  • Use a pair of tweezers to carefully tuck the tie back in place
  • If missing completely, use orthodontic wax to hold the wire in place until you can have it replaced
  • Call the office to schedule a quick visit to replace the tie or chain

Poking Wire

  • Try using orthodontic wax to cover the end
  • If it’s still uncomfortable, carefully tuck the wire in with a pencil eraser, slide the wire back to the center or cut it with clean nail clippers
  • Call your orthodontist if it is uncomfortable or persists

Loose Bracket or Band

  • Leave it in place if it’s not causing discomfort
  • Cover it with wax if it’s moving or irritating
  • Remove it carefully if it is not attached to a wire & bring to your next appt
  • Let your orthodontist know prior to your next visit so a repair can be scheduled

Lost or Broken Retainer or Aligner

  • Keep wearing your last aligner if it’s still in good shape
  • Call your orthodontist ASAP so it can be replaced or adjusted

Soreness After Adjustment

  • Stick to soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies)
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and tolerated (per package instructions)
  • Warm saltwater rinses help too!

Mouth Sores or Irritation

  • Rinse with warm salt water
  • Apply wax over brackets causing friction
  • Apply a dab of topical oral gel to ease discomfort

When to Call Us Immediately

  • Injury to the face and or mouth
  • Swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection
