Daycare or Nanny? How to Choose for Your Family - The North County Moms

Daycare or nanny? It’s one of the most common decisions and the first of many tough ones you’ll make as a mom. For some families, scheduling, budget or number of kids makes the choice more obvious, and for others, they may pivot as their kids grow and lives change. To help anyone on the fence sort through their decision, The Local Moms Network asked NYC-based clinical psychologist Dr. Laura Markham, founder of  PeacefulParentHappyKids.com, herself a mom of two teens, for her expert input on the pros and cons of each:

Why Families Choose Daycare

1. Peer interaction in real time
Simply interacting with other kids support social development, especially as kids head into the preschool years.

“Group care gives children daily opportunities to practice social skills like turn-taking and cooperation,” says Dr. Markham.

2. Reliable structure for working families
While a nanny can call out sick or need vacation time, daycare days and hours are extremely consistent.

“For many parents, the biggest advantage of daycare is reliability—knowing you have consistent, predictable care allows you to be more present with your child when you’re together,” shares Dr. Markham.

3. Structured environment.

The rhythm of a daycare day can support emotional regulation through predictability.

Says Dr. Markham: “Predictable routines help young children feel safe—and that sense of safety is what allows their brains to focus on learning and exploration.”

4. Built-in activity planning
A quality daycare will have programming planned with child development at the forefront.

“A well-run daycare offers thoughtfully planned activities that support language, motor skills, and exploration in ways that can be harder to sustain day after day at home,” Dr. Markham explains.

5. Often more cost-effective
In many areas, daycare is significantly less expensive than a full-time nanny. This is especially true if you only have one child.

“For many families, daycare makes high-quality care financially accessible, which reduces stress in the household—and that benefits children, too,” notes Dr. Markham.

Why Families Choose a Nanny

1. Strong, secure attachment relationship
A consistent caregiver allows for deep attunement and emotional security.

“What builds a child’s capacity for independence later is early security—having a caregiver who is consistently responsive to them,” says Dr. Markham.

2. Individualized care and pacing
Not every child has the same needs. Customized care can be driven by what the child needs that day or the family’s priorities for their child.

Dr. Markham explains: “With one-on-one care, the adult can follow the child’s cues moment by moment, which supports regulation and reduces unnecessary stress.”

3. Lower stress for younger or more sensitive children
Home environments can be calmer and less overwhelming.

“Some children—especially under age three or those with more sensitive nervous systems—do better in quieter settings where they aren’t competing to get their needs met,” she shares.

4. Family has more say in child’s daily routine
Schedules and caregiving approaches can be customized.

“A nanny allows the caregiving approach to align closely with the family’s values and routines, which creates more continuity for the child,” Dr. Markham notes.

5. Greater flexibility for changing schedules

A nanny can often adjust to late meetings, travel days, or unexpected changes in routine.

Says Dr. Markham: “One of the biggest practical benefits of a nanny is flexibility—when workdays run late or schedules shift, children can stay in a familiar environment with a trusted caregiver, which reduces stress.”
