Does my child really need to see an orthodontist at age 7? - The North County Moms

Parents are often surprised when they hear that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. If your child’s teeth seem straight, you may wonder, “Isn’t that too early?”

The good news is that an orthodontic evaluation at age 7 doesn’t usually mean your child needs braces right away. In fact, most children won’t! Instead, it’s an opportunity to identify developing problems early, when they may be easier to monitor or treat.

What makes age 7 important?

By age 7, children typically have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This allows the doctors at Great Smiles pediatric dentistry and orthodontics to evaluate how the jaws are growing, how the permanent teeth are developing, and whether there are bite problems that could become more serious over time.

There are signs your child may benefit from an early evaluation even if your child isn’t complaining.
It’s worth mentioning if you notice:
●Crowded or overlapping teeth
●Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
●Difficulty biting or chewing
●Teeth that don’t come together properly
●Thumb sucking that continues beyond the preschool years
●Mouth breathing
●An underbite, overbite, crossbite, or open bite
●Teeth that stick out and are more likely to be injured

Early evaluation matters!
Not every orthodontic problem requires early treatment, but catching issues sooner can sometimes:
●Guide jaw growth.
●Create space for permanent teeth.
●Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth.
●Improve oral function.
●Simplify future orthodontic treatment.
●In some cases, reduce the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later in life.

Does an evaluation mean braces?
Absolutely not! And the orthodontic evaluation at Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is complimentary and full of great information!  Many children simply need periodic monitoring as they grow. We will let you know if everything is developing normally or if a referral for an orthodontic evaluation is appropriate.
The role of your pediatric dentist at Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics!
We evaluate your child’s growth and dental development at every routine visit and are always on the lookout for those items mentioned above during our thorough history and exams. Because we see children regularly from infancy through adolescence, we’re often the first to recognize subtle changes that could affect your child’s smile and bite.
Our goal is never to recommend treatment before it’s needed—it’s to make sure your child has the healthiest smile possible as they grow.

If you have questions about your child’s bite or wonder whether it’s the right time for an orthodontic evaluation, we’re always happy to help. Early guidance can provide peace of mind, whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all!
