New Year Cleanse: Day 10 — Yes! It’s Nutritional Yeast | The North County Moms

Nutritional yeast is fun to have around, on or off the cleanse. On the cleanse, I use it as a parmesan cheese-like substitute. It’s umami flavor (a savory taste profile) is unique yet became slightly addictive once I got accustomed to eating it.

Maria’s Cleanse Notes

One of the bonuses of nutritional yeast, is it’s versatility. “Nooch” (nutritional yeast’s nickname) has the ability to give you a sense that you’re eating something other than what’s actually in your mouth. For instance, my bowl of organic brown rice pasta with sprinkled nutritional yeast smacks of a typical bowl of pasta tossed in grated parmesan. Ever make homemade baked kale chips? They’re better with a dousing of “nooch”. I’ll be making a soup later this week. Guess what I’ll be using as a thickening agent with a savory undertone? Discover more about nooch in my nutritional yeast post from last year.

Plus, on top of it all, as the name implies, nutritional yeast is packed with nutrients, which my collaborative partner on this post, nutritionist, Francesca Orlando, will elaborate on below. So you can see why on a cleanse this essential condiment or supplemental ingredient is key to any cleanser’s repertoire to enhance recipes, plated dishes, and fortified snacks.

Francesca’s Take

Nutritional yeast is a versatile and nutrient-rich food often used in plant-based diets. It is an excellent source of B vitamins, including B12, which are crucial for energy metabolism and nervous system function. With its savory and cheese-like flavor, nutritional yeast serves as a flavorful seasoning or topping, enhancing the taste of various dishes. Rich in protein and fiber, it supports satiety and muscle maintenance.

Nutritional yeast is often fortified with essential minerals like zinc and selenium, further contributing to overall health. The presence of beta-glucans in nutritional yeast may also support immune function. Incorporating nutritional yeast into your meals adds a savory kick and boosts nutrients, particularly for those following plant-based or vegan diets.
