This month, our hero image for The North County’s Moms’ newsletter features the historic Torrey Pines Gliderport.
Historic location in La Jolla
If you didn’t know it, the La Jolla landmark location has launched many historic firsts throughout its 100 years—from Charles Lindberg’s first glider flight to Del Mar in 1930, to the debut of radio-controlled model planes in the 1960s. Not to mention, (and given its name, you might have guessed this…) the TP Gliderport is notably the place where foot-launched aviation got its start. During the 1970s the innovative form of pilot-powered soaring, aka hang-gliding, brought a new form of aviation, recreation and an aeronautical sport to the San Diego community.
Visit the Torrey Pines Gliderport
If you haven’t experienced the view from the Torrey Pines Gliiderport, it’s worth a trip to La Jolla to take it in. When you arrive, you’re apt to see colorful paragliders and hang-gliders launching from the cliffs and soaring over the Pacific. It’s a great venue to share with visiting friends and relatives, giving them a true San Diego coastline experience!
